Standards in the Music Room

North Carolina Essential Standards for Music are the skills, understandings, and learning experiences that students have in music at each grade level. The Music Essential Standards are taught hand-in-hand with the  Cherokee Language/Culture Curriculum:
 
Goal 1.0 FAMILY: The learner will recognize the value of family and clans.
  1.01 Identify and label family members in relation to self and others.
  1.02 Identify and learn importance of various clans.
  1.03 Discuss the importance of maintaining the language and family values throughout the generations.
Goal 2.0 LOCATIONS: The learner will identify physical and geographical places of importance in daily life.
  2.01 Identify the various townships within the Qualla Boundary.
  2.02 Identify significant places within the community, such as buildings, parks, landforms, etc.
  2.03 Name and discuss important cultural sites.
Goal 3.0 SIGNIFICANT PERSONS: The learner will recognize and define the roles of significant people within the community.
  3.01 Identify and label tribal officials.
  3.02 Discuss the roles of tribal leaders.
  3.03 Recognize and discuss various occupational roles..
Goal 4.0 TRANSPORTATION: The learner will describe the movement of goods and people.
  4.01 Label various types of transportation.
  4.02 Compare/contrast various modes of transportation.
  4.03 Discuss how the movement of goods and people has changed over time.
Goal 5.0 BODY PARTS: The learner will identify various components of the human body and recognize the value of good health.
  4.01 Name and label parts of the body.
  4.02 Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy choices: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Goal 6.0 SPORTS AND GAMES: The learner will demonstrate knowledge of sports and games in the past and present.
  6.01 Explain the rules, history, and purpose of various traditional games.
  6.02 Demonstrate the knowledge and actions of sports terms.
Goal 7.0 FOODS: The learner will apply knowledge of foods through identification and classification.
  7.01 Identify and label foods.
  7.02 Categorize foods by various means.
  7.03 Recognize traditional foods.
Goal 8.0 PLANTS: The learner will apply knowledge of plants through identification, classification, and cultural importance.
  8.01 Identify and label plants.
  8.02 Discuss various uses of plants, such as medicine, food, crafts, etc
Goal 9.0 ANIMALS: The learner will apply knowledge of animals through identification, classification, and cultural importance.
  9.01 Identify and label animals.
  9.02 Categorize animals by various means.
  9.03 Explain meanings of animal legends.
Goal 10.0 EARTH AND SPACE: The learner will identify and describe various entities of nature.
  10.01 Identify and recognize weather conditions and relate them to the seasons.
  10.02 Name celestial objects.
  10.03 Explain meanings of earth and space legends.
Goal 11.0 CLOTHING: The learner will name and describe traditional and contemporary clothing.
  11.01 Identify and label articles of clothing.
  11.02 Discuss history of traditional clothing.
  11.03 Identify various styles and purposes of regalia.
Goal 12.0 ARTS AND CRAFTS: The learner will explore the history of various cultural arts and crafts.
  12.01 Discuss the significance of tradition arts and crafts.
  12.02 List supplies and steps needed in order to create traditional crafts.
  12.03 Participate in drama, dance, and music.
Goal 13.0 MEASUREMENT: The learner will understand various units of time/space relationships and money.
  13.01 Count using ordinal and cardinal numbers
  13.02 Recognize the concept and value of money.
  13.03 Use comparative words such as first/last, bigger/smaller, and more/less.
Goal 14.0 BASIC CONVERSATION: The learner will apply knowledge of common words and phrases.
  14.01 Respond to grade appropriate commands.
  14.02 Ask and answer grade appropriate questions.
  14.03 Increase usage of descriptive vocabulary.
  14.04 Increase usage of active and stated verbs.
